While we think of automobiles as an integral part of American life, the fact is that theyโre just objectively a bad form of transportation. Theyโre costly, they donโt scale well, and theyโre a leading cause of death in the country. The oil and automobile lobbies have done a lot of work to make it feel like thereโs no way we could live without cars, but the fact remains that itโs very possible to take significant steps to diminish the relevance of cars in everyday life.
