Context: Maud Gonne was an Irish patriot, actress, and feminist. She was one of the founders of Sinn Féin (We Ourselves/Party), and an early member of the theatre movement started by her longtime suitor, W.B. Yeats. She co-founded Inghinidhe na hÉireann (Daughters of Ireland) in 1900, which promoted Irish language, culture, and anti-imperial politics, especially among women and youth.

Context: Constance Georgine Markievicz was an Irish revolutionary nationalist politician, suffragist and socialist. Born in London, she came from the upper class Anglo-Irish Protestant landowning elite, which she abandoned in favour of Irish independence and social reform.

Context: In the years before 1916, the organisers of the Rising quietly recruited men who already had military experience, particularly Irish veterans of the British Army and disciplined members of the Irish Volunteers. Training was deliberately low-key: drilling took place openly under the guise of volunteer exercises, while more serious preparation was handled by trusted Irish Republican Brotherhood officers within the ranks. Rather than mass conscription, the rebellion relied on careful selection, secrecy, and ideological commitment, ensuring that those chosen were willing to act despite overwhelming odds.

Context: Howard Carter discovered the entrance to Tutankhamun’s tomb on 4 November 1922 after years of searching in the Valley of the Kings. Clearing the stairway revealed sealed doorways that had miraculously kept the burial largely safe from looters. On 26 November he looked inside and saw a room filled with untouched treasures. It became the first nearly intact royal tomb ever found and ignited global fascination with ancient Egypt.

I’m certainly no gun nut, but I chanced upon this marvel on YT, admiring what a great leap forward it was for the Allies. The main ideas here are: it’s inconspicuous, breaks down easily, and has the most effective built-in silencer the world had ever seen, at that point. Evidently a fired bullet sounded no louder than a car door shutting from close range, and from distance, in city and crowd environments, it was effectively impossible to hear. Indeed, solving the multi-problem of guns creating noise in three significant ways was the major breakthrough.
