Seems overdue but I notice they don't mention how likely it is to pass. I'll be pleasantly surprised if this becomes law.
That's UNFAIR to make KIDNAPPERS wear Masks! ONLY People using their FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS should be Prohibited from ANONYMITY!

Instead of makes, make them wear their badge number and or name across their chests in an easily readable font/size.
And who's going to make these arrests?
Make arrests by police that don't identify themselves or their badge number ineligible for jail time, and their statements should be ineligible in court. Police don't want detainees getting off free and wasting their time? Guess the body cam needs to be on when you declare their arrest and your badge number.
Tie state and municipal police department bonuses, benefits, and overtime pay to adherence to identification policy. Department has credible reports of violations and fails to properly investigate, discipline, or fire the offending officers? Sorry, your department is ineligible for their usual handouts this quarter. Your department is doing a good job policing themselves in good faith? Looks like someone's getting all that leftover bonus money.
Would also be great if they changed the law about showing identification while you're only detained.
Whether it passes or not, civilians need to start using the infrared on their phone cameras to see through face coverings and profile law enforcement identities during execution of illegal orders anyway.
I cannot believe there is not a widely used FOSS app for this when the hardware is in your pocket already and the research is prevalent for how to do this.
So how do we do this?

I didn't see anything there about seeing through face coverings
Bummer, you are right. I was wrong. I misread the first study and thought they were detecting faces through object like glasses using infrared, however that is not the case. They just mentioned detecting eyes through glasses(using visible spectrum) and then moved on to talking about infrared for other purposes.
Damn, well I'll take down the comment. Thanks for pointing this out, sorry to waste your time!
There's no way Newsom doesn't veto this if it passes...
It's not like it matters either way. Who's going to enforce it?
Theoretically, the courts.
