Frankly I’m concerned about the idea that government devices would have any chat app that isn’t end-to-end encrypted and verifiably so, or alternatively built by the Australian Government itself.
Though it is worth noting the source of this recommendation is a parliamentary committee. Basically, politicians making political decisions. It may or may not be based in any actual concrete evidence.
Honestly if it’s a fucking work phone why aren’t they locked down to shit. It’s not hard.
Social networking should be done on personal devices anyway. Bearing in mind the risk still exists even in that scenario that bad actors can still buy data from data brokers to infer location, personal particulars etc of most users of the big social networks anyway.
Shoulda happened years ago. Should also happen to Facebook, twitter and insta as well. Spying IS spying. Whilst arguable the Chinese could have more nefarious intentions doesn’t mean we should trust Zuck or Elon either.
It should cover any app based out of China or really any app that has its servers based offshore. We know literally everyone is trying to spy on everyone else. Why make it possible at all on government devices?
What do you think about Lemmy/fediverse on gov devices?
I suppose the gov, or a department/service could spin up their own server. Would that be ok?
