Oh come on, this is adorable!
It has become Meatwad!
The Oregon city of Bend has spent $1,500 (£1,188) on removing googly eyes from seven of the eight sculptures impacted.
Then leave them there…
Clearly someone’s never heard of the Streisand Effect.
Yeah. If there a better way to enshrine sticking googly eyes on statues as an absolutely unshakeable part of your local culture, I don’t know it.
You don’t own the world, man. You just live in it. You don’t get to demand what people are going to do to their public spaces just because someone gave you an office to sit in for a little while.
Perfect!! How do I now become the guy they pay to “remove” the googly eyes?
👀
I wonder if there’s an adhesive that’d be safer. It’s public art, so it’s for the public to react to (they apparently don’t remove like santa hats) but also since it’s for the public, there’s some responsibility to keep it intact.
Of course, if you’re sticking eyes to public works, you probably can’t be like ‘don’t worry it’s a safe glue’ or they’ll find you. What I’m saying is officials should apply googly eyes themselves.
1: this makes me want to travel 2,000 miles to stick every googly eye I have on every statue I can find
B- 1500 DOLLARS??? For SEVEN STATUES
Someone is ripping the city off, or someone in the office is stealing because that’s like… 5 minutes at each statue. 6 if you want to make sure no sticky residue is left.
I suspect that they have a crew that does general maintenance, and they had to allocate the crew to go remove the googly eyes, and they semi-honestly added up the salary of that crew for whatever number of days they had to get allocated to googly eye removal duty. I think it’s unlikely that they had to hire a special contractor or spend $1,500 on a specific googly eye removal reagent.
You are totally right. I was involved in a local council thing once. They had some plans promised, but had to cancel because the budget wasn’t there and costs were much higher than expected. I was outraged, as were a lot of people. So a local dude and myself volunteered to go over the budget and the cost, see where the fat could be cut and what could be changed to still make the plans happen. So we got together with the council accountants, went over all the numbers and were shocked at the state of things. We got a working space and access to anything we needed, with a very kind council worked who helped us every time we were there. We went over everything for two weeks and were sure we’d come out to be heroes in the end.
Spoiler alert: we weren’t. You’d be amazed at what even simple things actually cost, once you account for everything. And the amount of rules, regulations and compliance public work comes with. That eats up a lot of overhead. The council workers did a good job of cutting costs where possible and had creative stuff to make a lot happen with very little money. Our own proposals came out more expensive with a worse result when we calculated it. We even found some unaccounted costs in the original council plans. So we did not in fact save the days as heroes, but had to admit to hundreds of people we failed and the original plan was more expensive than we thought.
Anything government does is expensive and takes a lot of time. Everyone I’ve ever met in government who wasn’t a politician does their damned best to make everything faster and cheaper. It really put me in my place and I’ve come away with a lot of respect for people I once disliked.
I’m absolutely sure there were at least four people on a crew going around to the reported ones, my point is a single person out for a stroll with a step ladder could do the same thing with barely any effort.
Incidentally, a single guy with a stepladder could totally cost the city another $1500 in about 10 minutes, and keep the crew in business.
Up next, the city spends $150,000 to install security cameras to catch the googly-eye vandals.
Hardly an act of vandalism. No harm done. So… what is the issue?
“We own this large collection of public art and really want to bring awareness to the community that applying adhesives does harm the art. So as stewards of the collection, we wanted to share that on social media.”
. . .
The “Phoenix Rising” sculpture may even need to be repainted entirely.
Adhesive can definitely damage some materials. The article says the during Christmas, people hang wreathes and Santa hats on the sculptures which the city doesn’t remove. So I think if people doing it weren’t using glue/whatever adhesive to get them to stay on, it wouldn’t be a big deal.
The city should just start selling statue-safe googly eyes with a reasonable markup for maintenance costs
The exact same strategy as the parents using the same slang as their kids so it’ll lose its impact and the kids will abandon it. I love it.
Magnets could work for the steel sculptures. Maybe some kind of thin wire for the bronze statues? I’m sure there are ways to make this work that don’t mess with the surface finish of the statues and the concern about damaging them is legitimate.
This is like the swedish xmas hay goat that always catches on fire… except this is less destructive

Yeah, stop with that and start with better alternatives.
Angry eyes then?
Horny eyes.
googly eyed guillotines?
