Following an ABC Investigation, the Australian Tax Office admits criminals have fraudulently claimed more than $557 million from the Commonwealth using an identity loophole.
Seems like fining businesses enough to threaten them as a going concern might make them take security more seriously. Might also stop every single goddamn online storefront asking you to sign up to make a purchase.
As for the ATO, I understand why they want to make things as convenient as possible for people. Unlike Medicare or Centrelink where people need their services, the ATO wants to make things easy so people put in their returns.
