I like alcohol. That doesn’t mean every bar should merge into one big bar. Sometimes, despite two identical themed bars serving the same drinks and having similar clientele, you can have a cracking time in one and a shit time in the other.
Sometimes, that’s due to the staff (or mods in terms of Lemmy), sometimes, that’s due to particularly fun customers being in that day, and sometimes it’s just your mood on the day.
Having multiple communities for the same topic is a feature, not a bug. It also prevents a community from being strangled by 1 or 2 bad mods as another community can be made in response. Unlike the Reddit model, where there is 1 community for 1 topic, and if it has bad mods, well, you’re shit out of luck.
To be fair, Ukraine is part of a defense agreement too. A shame one of the signatories is the aggressor…
Sadly, it’s just a shadow minister, which means no power. He’s not in government, but rather is the government’s opposition. It’s looking likely that at the next general election Labour will win, and he’ll have some power to do something then, but at the moment it’s just words.
Even one of the most revered OG dictators who willingly gave up his power after just 16 days was still an asshole.

A benevolent dictator is still a dictator.
Upper middle class is a made-up term to make those in the working class who earn the most think they’re not in the same boat as “the poors”. If everything comes crumbling down, they’ll be waiting in the food lines like the rest of us. Millionaires and billionaires will not have the same problems.
We’ve seen from things like the Panama Papers that the rich are far richer than they’d have you believe. I’m sure they’ll be just fine being taxed a bit more.
Also, £120 billion of pension money is likely to wind up straight back in the pockets of the same billionaires anyway as they own the major companies that pensioners are going to be buying everything from anyway.
Spreading doom and gloom that we’ll just all have to suck it up and suffer the consequences of past decisions is a shite position. Don’t repeat past mistakes of letting the rich off with it, eat the rich, enjoy retirement at a reasonable age, spread socialism.
No 80085?
So a difference of political opinion = toxic? Got it.
What a way to phrase the headline. We hopefully won’t have any nuclear winters!
They’ve done a lot of exploration, though. I worked on some of the kit that went there. It came back pretty beat up, so it’s rough out there, but there’s plenty of oil.
New oil extractions were halted in the North Sea for a while, not extracting it doesn’t mean much. It just means it’s not been deemed profitable enough yet.
