What a total dad joke. I’m crossposting.

I had the opposite. When we learned about magnets in high school, it was pretty much told assuming the atomic and crystalline scale of natural magnets to be a black box. Meanwhile, the instructions on electromagnets gave me enough to go off for me to extend that down to said crystalline and atomic level. So when I stepped to my teachers, claiming I had a theory and enthusiastically explaining that spinning electrons created an electric current, which in turn create magnetic fields at the atomic level, which can then line up with neighbouring ones to become a whole magnet, they responded “yeah, that is exactly how magnets work.”

So a centre marking tells me it’s an 80 km/h road, and the side markings, together with the trees off to the side, aim to optically narrow the road, making drivers more conscious of their speed. This is part of the Dutch universally applied standards of traffic calming.

If there were only markings on the side, usually a little inwards from the roadside, it’d be a 60 km/h road. This would be even more pronounced if the space outside of those lines had red asphalt. In such a case, it’s sometimes allowed, or even expected, for cyclists to cycle in the main roadway.

On this location though, the bike lane is off to the side. It’s an 80 km/h road, that’s too fast for on-street cycling.

As a Dutch person, nah. Double sided guardrails are the norm in here. It’s relatively uncommon to find a guard rail that’s single sided.

As someone who lives there, you’d wish. Instead it’s a real place to be envious of 😛

Apparently such a process helps in producing some really good glass.

I mean, xkcd numbers its comics sequentially, and he’s well into the 2000’s now, so a 1xy comic is ancient. Looks like at times, old xkcd was brutal.

I think there are two valid scientific/philosophical answers without taking religion into it, based on one question:

Are we specifically talking a chicken egg, or the concept of an egg?

In the former case, eggshells contain compounds that cannot exist in nature, and must come from a creature. a chicken egg cannot exist without a chicken before it, thus the chicken came first.

In the latter case, various evolutionary splits happened between animals evolving egg developing capability and some animals evolving into chickens. From this we can say that the egg came before the chicken.

Worst case, this solved exactly nothing. Best case, it can be an exercise in reasoning.

City “twinning” goes beyond the EU. And it can happen for all kinds of reasons. My favourite example is the towns of Dull, Scotland, Boring, Oregon and Bland, New South Wales.

You call it a bug.

I call it a feature.

Spooky.

Driverless is fine, it’s the magnetic thing that has me raising an eyebrow.

So that whenever Content ID and/or other legal hassle happens, Toby doesn’t need to be the one to do anything to resolve it.

I’m getting basically the same at the moment if I try to go there.

And have that tender blacklist be EU wide.

In this election, the “libs” are the VVD who, as a socialist (GL/PvdA) I’d hate to say but, are the most right wing reasonable party. You cannot project American political discourse and concepts on Dutch politics.

I’d wish upon Omtzigt to stick to his morals and tell the PVV to pound sand. Meanwhile, Timmermans has already declared that he’s ready to lead the opposition, and he has a history of zero patience for fascists, so there’s a chance this’ll become a minority coalition.
