It would be irrelivant. Trump will change anything and everything to suit his needs. You can change whatever you want and he’ll just change it back on day one. You know, that one day he made very clear that he was going to be a dictator. That’s the one day set aside to change every single thing he needs to. After that, nothing else matters.

Manufacturing won’t come back to the USA, it’ll just shuffle around any of dozens of countries that will still be cheaper to operate out of. Also, retalitory tariffs are a thing which will harm what manufacturing IS in the USA. Also, Trump promised his rich buddies 3 trillion dollars in tax breaks. He’s going to slash health budgets (and more besides) to fund it. What are people thinking!? They’re going to fund the ultra rich from their own pockets AND pay massively more for goods while damaging local industry?! I mean there’s a million other things to worry about including mass-deportation but cost of living is about to increase BIGLY!?

I don’t live in the US and am not an expert on any of this State vs Fed stuff but it seems to be the case that the government at the State level CAN restrict speech and descriminate against you based on your sexual orientation? Because they’re targeting books/speech that are relavant to people, partly at least, due to them being in the LGBTQIA+ community. And it’s up to YOU to defend your right to access that speech by taking legal action? So a kind of ‘guilty until proven innocent’ adjacent scenario. I’m so confused and maybe I’m missing something but it sure FEELS like the 1st amendment is optional?

I assume they could also therefore remove books based on the race of the characters in the books or because of the subject matter being of particular relavance to people of colour? But I assume that’s happened before and been tested legally and that’s the process that’s happening now with the LGBTQIA+ book bans? Is it simply that the LGBTQIA+ community isn’t yet as robust in their advocacy, lobbying & litigation as they need to be? That they don’t have the equivalent of the NAACP on their side? Should they have to? Isn’t the 1st ammendment and anti-descrimination law pretty clear?

As someone living outside the USA, I have struggled to understand what’s going on there and why it’s allowed to happen when the 1st ammendment exists expressly to stop the government from suppressing speech, the restriction of which can be damaging to vulnerable communites. Take the story of Roy and Silo, about a same sex couple (of penguins for goodness sake?!) raising a child together. This being banned sends a message to children of same sex parents that there is something wrong with their parents / family unit. I find that disturbing enough, but to the child, it could be traumatizing. How would parents explain to their child that their favourite book has been removed from their library purely because the subject of the story is a family just like theirs?!

Great to see the US/Dems getting fired up with some positivity for once! There’s a strong “Let’s goooo!” vibe now! It’s incredible how right-wing influencers targeted Kamala Harris’ laugh in that video, but watching it brings nothing but joy! With all the recent grimness, I’ll take this positivity any day! :-D Kamala is memeable and is leaning into it and I wouldn’t be surprised if they just grabbed that laugh video and used it in their own campaign! :-D (I’m not a US citizen, just excited for you finally!)

Yes, I am pretty sure this is the case. It’s not hard to think that people that walk / cycle past a business will notice more things. They’ll be lured in by those elaborate window displays you spent all morning setting up. They will smell the baked goods wafting by. They’ve probably worked up an appetite from all the walking/biking as well. They’ve maybe even had time to be influenced by your signage promising bargains, discounts etc etc. Cars are just zooming by, no attention whatsoever paid to your business unless they’re A) already intending to go there or B) you have something outside so offensively eye catching and distracting that it probably should be outlawed?!

Can’t people park around the corner and walk a few minutes?! If someone parks in a parking building you often have to walk/take a lift/take multiple stairs and STILL end up walking to the shop. Maybe slap up a bike stand and work on your marketing, product, quality, service or whatever else will make an actual difference to your businesses survival? /rant

Yikes, after reading that thread in its entirety I unsubbed from their channel. They will have to do a LOT to get me to ever come back. I’m not sure if that’s even possible?

I think that’s one of two separate ways to solve some of the problems. Yes, there’s long lasting, industrial style, built like a tank and made to last that costs a lot as one solution. But there could also be cheaper products that wouldn’t last as long except that when something does go wrong you could buy a fairly cheap replacement part and swap it out using readily available tools. Both solutions can and should exist and would serve different markets.

You don’t have to actually be able to do it yourself for it to be beneficial. If I am, lets just say for the sake of argument, completely hopeless and don’t know my quick web search pentalobes from my tri-points I should still be able to take a thing to a repair shop and they should be able to use standard tools to open it and use standard or at least affordable parts to repair it. We’re not talking about “changing oil is hard” because you can take your car to a workshop and they’ll do it for you. We’re talking about you can’t change the oil, you have to throw the car away and buy a new one.

I see now that France have something like this already. It’s fairly new and it’s up to the manufacturers to say how well they score on each criteria but it’s a start! French repair index

Yes, I love what they do but I think it’d have to be independant / not tied to commercial interests to be adopted widely.

Could there be a star rating on products like with the energy star rating? Start with 5 stars and for every egregious anti user repair sin take a star off? Would probably go into negative stars? Not user openable with standard tools, dock a star. Glued not screwed together, dock a star. Uses proprietory parts when standard alternatives are readily available, another star gone. Non user replacable battery, you’re now knocking on the door of a big fat ZERO stars!
