Alpha Centauri was awesome, but so were a lot of the other games. Colonization was a lot of fun. Call to Power is the civ game I want a real sequel to. Going way into the future tech was a lot of fun, and being able to build cities at the bottom of the ocean.

Of course, I think the whole franchise has gone downhill since Civ IV, so take my opinion as you will.

Side note. Don’t use hardware acceleration with TDARR. You will get much better encodes with software encoding, which is great for archival and saving storage.

Use hardware acceleration with Jellyfin for transcoding code on the fly for a client that needs it.

If you know what your client specs are, you can use TDARR to reencode everything to what they need and then you won’t have to transcode anything with Jellyfin.

Honestly, the problem is that “AI” is a dumb term that is way over used in these situations. Outside of Science Fiction, AI has generally been used to describe what “the next big thing” computers can do.

Using a term like “Large Language Model” to refer to ChatGPT explains what it actually does. Or Deep-Learning Text to image models for the image generation.

I remember playing around with TTS on a Apple ][ plus as a kid, there is nothing new about that, but using statistical models to have them imitate a voice is new, but just lumping them all in with Artificial Intelligence, is just dumb.

Yeah, but matching TTS to a character’s voice is where you would need it.

This is one sector where I am actually happy for AI to be available. I want to play a game where the NPC’s can say my character name.

That being said, I also want the voice actors to be compensated fairly. Maybe the guilds can set up a deal where using someone’s voice for training data is included.

This is the answer. It is expensive because it will be a low demand item. Most people will never need this, so it is a specialty item that is taking up valuable shelf space.

GPT is a tool that the students will have access to their entire professional lives. It should be treated as such and worked into the curriculum.

In my opinion (removed from the whole AI controversy) is that intellectual property law has been long abused, not by artists and creators but by publishers and studio owners who have used their landlord-esque positions to take control of most art, and then extend their IP rights while denying the public a robust public domain.

The idea that a strong public domain is beneficial to all culture has been lost. Now we have huge court cases because two different songs use a similar progression of notes. The point of copyright should be to motivate people to create more art, not prevent people from doing it.

Take the whole Under Pressure/Vanilla Ice fiasco. Nobody listening to “Ice Ice Baby” is going to then say to themselves “great, now I never have to listen to Queen again”. They are both very different songs in different genres, that use the same guitar riff.

I understand why selling pirate DVD’s should be illegal, for recently made movies that are still under print, but transforming a work should not be infringement.

I’m not sure, I can only reply anecdotally that I have used Apple laptops with mag safe connectors for many years and never had a problem with metal getting stuck in there and shorting stuff out.

I think I remember a post from a few years back where someone was having problems charging and found a used staple stuck in there, but I don’t think it has been a wide spread problem.

My current laptop has a MagSafe, and I had laptops from before they had switched to usb c charging and I have never had that problem.

The lightning phones could only use 2.0 speeds. There is no change to the hardware except for the form factor of the connector.

The magsafe ones still use USB-C on the charger side, and you are not required to use the magsafe cable, so honestly just bringing the charger and a C-to-C cable will charge both the phone and the laptop.
