  • I’ve heard a lot about Palestinians using solar to power several electronic devices in Gaza but it was primarily from Arab media sources like Al Jazeera. While this was on the much more corporate and mainstream news it was easy to miss without actively looking for it. You bring up a good point and I wonder if there’s more use of solar energy happening there, especially in dire conditions, that we’re missing out on as it’s not typically covered by major news sources. Hopefully we’ll be reading more stories like this in the future.

  • We don’t aim to censor anyone. Mods don’t enjoy receiving or responding to reports. Just be mindful of the words you chose as I asked. Unfortunately a word you used jokingly was reported for violating the very few and basic rules of this instance ( no bigotry, including racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia or xenophobia; ) that exist to make everyone feel welcome. “Hold back” on that and we’re all good.

  • I don’t see why you wouldn’t plan for any type of tangible material changes, especially when discussing a livable and liberated future, so that’s definitely something to consider. The building depicted in the photo exists in Milan and has one awards for architecture and urban development so I’m sure its designer. Stefano Boeri, did plan for this. Its been recognized for its positive impact on the environment and urban planning. Not just trees but a wind farm and solar energy equipment are included and the even the colors and species of the trees were planned in advance. While not seemingly super “punk” it seems like a good example of solarpunk ideas in the present which make a solarpunk future seem more plausible. It becomes “greenwashing” on when these ideas are coopted and used to advertise for corporations but I don’t see any yogurt ads here so that’s not exactly what’s happening,

  • Thanks for emphasizing this. I was a bit disappointed in that episode. I don’t remember any mention of decentralization which is integral to solarpunk. One of the hosts seemed to just respond to the other with a lot of whataboutism and negativity that just revealed a lack of understanding of solarpunk’s relationship to technology. For example, promoting electric cars instead of public transportation and reducing the amount of cars on the rode. Maybe that was the both-sides-ism to create discussion but it seemed like a missed opportunity to really dive into solarpunk technology. Maybe someone from this community could reach out about our approach to technology. They seem like they’d be open to hearing different viewpoints from the solarpunk community.

I don’t feel hopeless. I never said that. Your tone was a bit anxious is all. You are assuming that I’m in despair which is not the truth at all and not fitting with Solarpunk so that’s a little confusing. You are fine but to be frank I think you’re over thinking this video and it doesn’t require this much extra thought and discussion. I also don’t believe just voting is the answer and that’s another topic, I’m personally an Anarchist, and that’s not the point of Solarpunk so I think we may philosophically differ quite a bit. Seed bombing falls under direct action. Voting certainly doesn’t. You keep mentioning land management. Seed bombing is related to the punk aspect of Solarpunk and while it can bring in a diverse array of ideas the people in this video don’t seem as concerned about a land management group as you might want them to be. I also feel NGOs are less direct and often lead to inaction by utilizing the very structures this movement rebels against but that’s just a personal opinion and this is not the thread to unpack it. Another topic. The people in this video, I assume you watched it if you responded, are doing a DIY project. a bit different than volunteering for an organization and equally valid. This is one video and seed bombing is one that can be done. There are many different ways to create change and dual power structures are crucial

At any rate everything is fine and we may need to agree to disagree on some points and move on as I feel is best at this point. You brought up several issues that feel a bit off topic on my end. Try not to assume or project and voting discourse / preaching could easily lead to conflict at other times. Thanks again for your passionate response to the video and sorry if it upset you.

Thanks for your feedback. Try to keep it positive. I don’t think this project is a big cause for concern. This isn’t aiming for perfection, nor is any other aspect of Solarpunk. There could always be things that go wrong or people that become upset but there might not as well. Change upsets people sometimes. Doing nothing makes me more anxious than those things, personally as we’re in a climate emergency.

Btw, native species were mentioned in the video where it mentions kudzu. That makes me feel the person who made the video has thought these things through.

  • I’m on a small pixelfed instance as well and the global feed can be useful for discovering users on other pixelfed instances and also for viewing mastodon posts with pictures. Similar to mastodon it will expand as you follow more people so keep an eye on it and maybe use your mastodon account to find more photographers using hashtags like #photography. Your discover page should show photos under trending hashtags as well so check for that and use search under hashtags. It does show local trending photos accounts at the moment, you’re correct. Dansup, the pixelfed developer, says in the next update for the beta app which is shipping soon and going public soon, the discover page will be expanding to show trending users and photos from across the fediverse.
