Interesting! I can’t actually say on that one; to me, “spanking” sounds like an old fashioned intensifier I’ve heard “brand spanking new” a few times, which feels like the same kind of use. As to whether that has anything to do with the sail, I’m not sure. It looks like the sail itself was introduced in the late 18th century; in Seamanship in the Age of Sail, John Harland reports that one William Nicholson complains about the new sail design in a book of his in 1792. That’s the closest I can get to origin of the term.

I’ve never heard of a “gallant,” just a “top gallant” (usually “t’gallant,” sometimes “gans’l”). I’ve sailed on ships with split t’gallants, though. I did sail on one ship with a skys’l, never a moonraker; I suspect those are both terms for “a sail above the royal”.

A ton of work and attention went into that film to keep it historically accurate, even down to assigning all the extras to watches and figuring out what the watch rotation would be and who would be on duty at any given time.

FYI the red ones are studding sails, often called stu’nsails because sailors love leaving off letters (like how “boatswain” is often called “bosun”). Also, jibs are staysails; staysails are any sail that slides up and down a stay, which are the pieces of standing rigging that support the masts from the front and the back.

Definitely; OP’s linked article doesn’t have any quotes that refer to copyright, while this one of yours adds a lot of context that was otherwise missing. There’s a world of difference between allowing retention of IP addresses and creating a cleaning house for IPs suspected of distributing works.

I don’t see a good way to put it on a keychain; the only hole looks tiny, and right on an edge where it’s likely to snap after a year or so of wear.

Microsoft Adventure

My understanding is that digital nomads are basically just long-term tourists rather than immigrants; they don’t get visas that allow permanent residency or anything. Iceland’s digital nomad visa, for example, only lets you stick around for 6 months, and you can’t renew it more than once a year. So you really do have to be somewhat nomadic, and travel to a different country.

You can have non-markdown files in your vault, but I’m not sure how readily you can search them by default; there may be plugins that support that use case though.

CherryTree is way clunkier, IMO, and has too many irrelevant options that get in the way, particularly around formatting. Obsidian is just markdown, so you don’t have the option of spending 15 minutes trying to figure out why code blocks are showing up as dark text on light background even though you’re in dark mode, which was my last experience in CherryTree. Looking and cross referencing documents is also super easy; I’m not sure if CherryTree even does that.

SyncThing is fantastic; I use it for Obsidian files and also for password manager databases.
