But wouldn’t them buying all the rights to “basically everything” incentivise them more to jack up prices and include ads since the user base has no legal alternatives ?

Yeah it is as if someone invented the microwave oven and everyone over hypes it as being able to cook Michelin star meals. People then dismiss it entirely since it cannot produce said Michelin star meals.

If you are talking about the late 90’s and early 2000’s there was plently of multiplayer games and saving was pretty much standard.
