I’m curious what made it that complicated. Was the Synology OS (DSM they call it right?) fighting you along every step or something? As far as I know it’s a custom Linux OS but I have no idea what it’s based on, or if it’s even based on a specific distribution… I could definitely see it being a challenge depending on the answers haha.
I use my iPhone with a Bluetooth controller all the time for Moonlight game streaming when my wife or son are using the TV or we’re out of the house. That works just fine. Playing games on a phone isn’t that terrible at all - with the right input method. I’m admittedly considering going for a Pro on my next upgrade, just for the additional screen size for text legibility in some games. And it’s also not my first choice.
However, I’m not about to buy AAA titles on the App Store where I’ll only be able to play the game on my phone…
Eh, I just generally avoid Nvidia on Linux hosts unless I specifically need it. Their driver situation is better than it was, but still sucks.
If it wasn’t that it’s Nvidia and that you bought this specifically for Linux, I’d have told you to keep the Nvidia, as you did get a significantly better card for the price you paid.

I just don’t understand how you get to the idea that the phone you carry around is inherently any different than your computer, and that giving the option is inherently gonna compromise your security if you decide not to turn it on.
I can see both setups being necessary… If im sitting in a chair, I don’t think I’d want my virtual monitors to be following my head while I move, I’d still want them to be roughly around my keyboard and mouse. But using it while walking, they absolutely should be floating around my head, keeping the main one at some fixed angle.
Cohen is a massively talented songwriter and poet, but IMHO, most of his songs have covers that are a lot more pleasing to listen to than his.
I’m pretty sure Leonard Cohen wasn’t really your average teenager’s jam at the time Shrek came out. A lot of us knew the song, but I’m pretty sure many wouldn’t be able to tell you who sang it. Smash Mouth didn’t really get much airtime over here either before Shrek, as far as I can remember, and the movie was amongst the top grossing movies of the year IIRC, so it’s not that surprising that many people discovered them both through the movie.
Man, you’re spot on with that last phrase, at least, for me. All I want is a MR headset comfortable enough to wear all day, and to be able to manage virtual windows and/or monitors comfortably in front of me. The rest I genuinely don’t care about. I dream of the day I can replace my big monitor (or multi-monitor setup) with a lightweight pair of fancy goggles that would give me all the monitor real estate I would ever want.
Naming is really hard, I can’t blame you haha. I never had to name public facing things, at work I usually advocate for either really straightforward descriptive names or just having fun on a theme (e.g. we had classical music based stuff at one place, like Orchestra, Sonata, Symphony, and pop culture/nerdy stuff at another like Marvel heroes or SW characters, etc). Coming up with a name that’s marketable, discoverable and searchable sounds like a nightmare lol
The practice of calling a product “FooBar X”, unless it’s literally your version 10 that you just happen to be marketing in Roman numerals, feels a bit like those businesses that named themselves “Plumbing 2000”, it’s a bit tacky and doesn’t tend to age well IMHO. But hey, it’s not like it’d be the first software with a slightly kitsch name I use either lol

Yeah, I’m no graphic designer but the fediverse logo looks like a nightmare to render at small sizes, which is what designers are looking for in a logo, typically - something that is easy to recognize, tells something about the product, and scales well at all sizes, from favicon to building sized ad. I like that it conveys its own meaning really well, but it’s also extremely busy. So many crossing lines in such a small space just looks like a garbled mess at small sizes. Take this image and scale it down to 16x16px, you can see what I mean.
There are cheap NASes/home servers to be bought/built for a couple hundred bucks, with very limited RAM, while TrueNAS recommends 8GB minimum. It’s also often much cheaper to have the option to buy mismatched drives on sale and expand your storage over time, than having to buy matched drives, and having to plan long term for potential expansion of else have to replace a whole set of drives at once if you need more. But fair enough, yes.
It’s the same model JetBrains has for their IDEs. You pay for a year, you get a perpetual fallback license. You pay again, get another year of updates.
JetBrains (accurately) still calls it a subscription though.
I don’t have half the world’s RAM to give to ZFS on my budget NAS tho, and Unraid allows mismatched drive sizes, which is pretty attractive to budget users. TrueNAS is definitely great though.
Unraid’s “killer feature” is the ability to mix and match disparate drive sizes and only requiring the parity drive to be at least as large as your largest data disk, a la MergeFS/Snapraid. Also ZFS chugging RAM like there’s no tomorrow so not really an option for underpowered devices like some NASes. But yeah, TrueNAS is nice.
I don’t think it’s a particularly far fetched idea to imagine that people spending their days outside before the invention of sunscreen would develop more sunburns than the general population regardless, even if only once or twice a year on unexpectedly long or sunny days…
