I ran an Apple TV in the living room for a long time to access my Plex server and whatever subscription my wife has this month. As time went on it got more and more glitchy until it came to the point where I had to power cycle the thing every few days. Replaced it with a cheap fire stick, annoyed the crap out of me. Replaced that with a cheap Roku, it was only slightly better than the shitty firestick.

My wife got me the NVIDIA shield pro for Christmas this year, and I picked up the p2920 controller for it. My god this thing is awesome - not only is it the best tv box I’ve ever used, I can use moonlight to play games on my rig or GeForce now to stream games. I highly recommend this thing

I have a group of friends, half in same town as me, half on the other side of the country, that get together once a week ion discord and play dnd via a self hosted foundry virtual tabletop docker. We used to play 5e but we decided to try out pathfinder 2e to see if we liked it and we haven’t gone back, pathfinder is fantastic. The flexibility with the actions makes it feel like you always get a chance to do something and you aren’t just wasting your turn when you are getting into position or whatever. Feels close enough to 5e that most of your intuition will be pretty close, just use a different website to look shit up. Highly recommend pathfinder!

I use old iPhones as video baby monitors in much the same way with an app called AlfredCamera, works pretty good for a free app on scrap hardware

I was always a lurker on reddit because every time I spoke my mind I would get silenced/banned/whatever. Literally every time I ever tried to say anything that wasn’t 100% in lockstep with the hive mind, shut down, so I stopped bothering. So far Lemmy has been great in that regard!

I have a rack in my garage, all my servers and my gaming rig are in it - fiber cables run through my attic to my office to connect the front end of my gaming rig (monitor and usb c hub with peripherals).

My domain and all of my services are either VM’s on vmware or xcp-ng, or dockers on a VM. It’s all VM’s, except for the gaming rig and the Veeam backup server - they are bare metal.

VMware VM’s are backed up with Veeam to a bare metal windows 2019 backup server (because its backup its the only bare metal server in the rack). First copy goes to internal RAID5 array. Second copy goes to ISCSI target that is netgear NAS in RAID5. Third copy goes to Wasabi.

Most docker data is on the docker VM’s themselves, but if i need to mess with the data on the docker, that data is on a RAID5 Synology NAS. This gets backed up to Wasabi via duplicati. The system backup for the bare metal backup server also gets duplicati’ed to wasabi to make recovery from a site level disaster a little bit easier.

Everything XCP-NG gets backed up first copy to an UnRaid NAS with 2 parity disks, then copied to Wasabi. I will eventually get a second local target - I have some promising candidates in the shop, I just need time to diagnose and repair them.

Every Windows server and my gaming rig gets backed up direct to cloud with Redstor since I have extra space in the NFR bucket where I work and I manage that product. Gaming rig has no other backup so that’s nice (most game installs not backed up but everything else is). Other windows servers are backed up either via the Veeam chain or the XCP-NG chain, but it’s nice to have a secondary backup. I would do the Linux ones as well but Redstor sucks with Linux right now and it’s not worth the hassle.

Plex media is on another UnRaid box with 2 parity drives, but no other backup. This content can all be re-downloaded via automated systems if the array ever fails. I have had the hardware that data is on fail several times but it’s always been recoverable, knock on wood.

I am slowly working on phasing out VMware/Veeam in favor of XCP-NG, but it’s a long process.

I made myself a wiki in my helpdesk system - I use osticket to send me various email alerts to so I can track issues I need to fix, and they have a little wiki option.

Then one day that host was down and I needed some info and I was very irritated. Now all of those notes are in my Apple notes backed up in iCloud and searchable on whatever I’ve got handy so if I need info I can get the info
