You seem to be ignoring where profits are going - shareholders have, for decades, taken far more than their fair share of things and wages absolutely can go up without driving companies out of business it’s just that one group has to take less and that’s the shareholders. Employers will continue to do anything in their power to keep shareholders happy over employees and that absolutely includes bringing in cheaper, migrant labor. It’s not a labor shortage, it’s a wage shortage and investing in productivity doesn’t reduce jobs, it creates new ones - often that require a different skill set than the one it replaced and that’s one reason we are failing, we aren’t helping people acquire new skills en mass

The company has far outgrown Linus’s ability to run it. Half the shit he says on the WAN show I cringe at as someone who’s done corporate management / systems consulting for the last decade+. I get the feeling he really is unable to separate his ego from his corporate responsibilities and this inability seeps through in all their content. Just take the Billet Labs fiasco as an example, he was so convinced he knew better that he felt insulted on the WAN show that his conclusion was brought into question when it was shown his methodology was abhorrently flawed; or look to his and the entire team’s proclivity to misappropriate inventory to their homes or the projects that personally benefit him and his family - I would hate to be his personal attorney as any litigation hitting LMG is sure to hit him personally as there is ample evidence of the corporate veil being pierced, and JFC why is the entire consumer tech market perpetually in the mindset of a horny 14 year old? What’s this community’s take?

Personally, I find non-commercial, source-available licenses consistent with the community-driven aspect of open-source and less restrictive than more aggressive copy-left licenses like GPL. I find that it allows persons, groups, and corporations to pursue additional business models other than support/services to monetize their work while still ensuring that individuals in the community are able to benefit from the work the sponsor and others are doing.

I understand the concerns this raises especially for the use of open-source tools in the commercial space and hope these source-available licenses are used sparingly and strategically (like in situations like Elastic where Amazon was profiting off Elastic while competing with them and ultimately not contributing back to the project which put the project’s funding at risk)

The Google bit somewhat makes sense if that was the attack vector but the Russia bit makes little sense other than if they continue to try to annex Ukraine, they’ll deface some websites to still show Ukraine as sovereign. I’m all for the move, the justifications though just seem a bit less impactful than just doing the act without comment

He slashed damn near 2/3 of the company, their HRIS systems were in disarray, they removed much of the force that made it advertiser friendly, came up with obscene API pricing (no doubt to try and cash in on LLM companies), and have failed to pay rent and server costs. Elon took a flawed business model and made it significantly worse all while giving a middle finger to their advertisers which is overwhelmingly their primary revenue source.

I’m well aware - as a public university things are a bit different as they are agents of the state so this becomes a free speech issue. Also, if a university’s student internet is the same network containing PII systems like their student records, there are much bigger problems. That’s why I mentioned that this action without any legislation that would curtail Bytedance’s data collection presents a student rights conundrum. The app does not (as far as we are aware) inject or capture information from the users network but rather the user themselves which they have consented to. The larger issue is whether or not the US should allow foreign entities to collect this info and that’s not something the university should be able to decide but rather the state and federal regulatory agencies and legislatures

Clemson isn’t private, it’s public. It is certainly their prerogative to secure their network and their users’ data but there are definitely concerns over government censorship. I don’t think this issue is as black and white as people ITT are making it out to be and absent a larger policy stance that would van TikTok or it’s practices, I’m not sure this is the right move though I understand their position given the inaction of state and national legislatures in banning foreign spyware

And the dev is rolling out features at a crazy pace. It feels like everytime I open the app it’s gotten significantly better
