When we pulled over he came over and asked for license and reg, we immediately asked why we got stopped and he said routine check, then proceeded to ask us a bunch of questions about where we are driving from, where to, why etc. I would not answer those now, but we didn’t know about how things go in the US then so we did. He didn’t get anything out of it luckily.
It’s such a contrast from Europe. I had the cops called on me once in the UK (and they also don’t have a great reputation) as I drank too much and somehow got stuck in someone’s garden knocking on their window at like 3am to let me out.
Cops came, ID’d me, asked what I was doing there and helped me climb out/half pulled me out then gave me a ride home. I remember them just having a laugh at me being stupid due to being drunk. I asked them if they could cuff me cuz I wanted to know what it’s like and they said no because they didn’t want me to hurt myself by falling over or something. I also asked if we could go through the McDonald’s drive through when we went by one on the way and offered to bribe them with a happy meal but they just chuckled and told me they can’t do that unfortunately. One of them walked me up to my flat and made sure I got in safe before leaving. Granted I wasn’t arrested or anything, but it felt like a positive experience and I woke up feeling thankful for them having been there the night before.
To contrast, I’ve once been pulled over in the US with friends and even though the cop didn’t do or say anything wrong, I distinctly remember feeling like his tone and demeanor was challenging (as if he wanted us to argue with him or something). We were let go without a ticket or anything in the end, all he said when we asked why we were pulled over is that it’s a routine check. It felt like a very negative experience and from what it sounds like, it’s as good as it could have gone in the US.
I get the convenience part so the staff doesn’t have to go around do it by hand, but it just seems infeasible to do it for the other examples mentioned.
E.g. you go in, pick up item listed for $10, finish shopping in 20 mins, item now costs $15 at till… probably leave it (so now the staff has to re-shelf it) and start shopping at a place that is not trying to scam you.
For the other example, if there are a few packs of something expiring and they reduce the price for all the items on the shelf, everyone will just take the ones which have a reasonable shelf life left leaving the expiring ones.
Both of these just seem stupid.
Oh cmon they don’t hoard the money. They use it to pay each other/politicians to make sure the status quo remains.
I wish you were the one writing the laws, this would be awesome.
It’s okay - just as long as it’s not a slightly larger pack of toothpaste, or god forbid some water. Luckily those get caught, so we’re still safe.
I have never seen contributors get anything for open source contributions.
In larger, more established projects, they explicitly make you sign an agreement that your contributions are theirs for free (in the form of a github bot that tells you this when you open a PR). Sometimes you get as much as being mentioned in a readme or changelog, but that’s pretty much it.
I’m sure there may be some examples of the opposite, I just… Wouldn’t hold my breath for it in general.

Some are very easy depending on how the game works (at least on android). E.g. when pokemon go came out you could just go to developer settings (in android settings) and change your location to wherever you wanted.
Another super easy one is changing the time to get around timegated games.
So sweet baby Inc (who I never knew of until now) felt attacked by a list on steam which collected titles they worked on (it didn’t say avoid apparently, just a list of titles they worked on with proof from their own media).
Kind of telling of the company that they saw this as an offense to them rather than as a tribute. If they thought their work was good they’d advertise this list themselves.

I definitely agree that the situation as it is is unacceptable, no 1 country should have so much power over the entire EU. As a Hungarian, I think it’s incredibly shameful how much damage fidesz causes even outside the country.
I think it’d be better to remove the unlimited veto’s from the EU though (which would obviously not happen as it’d be veto’d sadly). Hungary has been the bad guy for some years, but don’t forget that other countries do use their veto powers in a similar fashion, just so happens that recently they were more aligned (e.g. Russia bad)
I wish the EU had a way to enforce that a country follows basic democratic rules after joining too, e.g. free media. I hope they find a way to support Ukraine without giving Hungary with this corrupt government.
Everyone is free to vote, but there has been 10+ years of unbound propaganda since fidesz first won a super majority and basically centralised what the news broadcasts say in the country, controlled by a government appointed agency.
The country is also full of massive government funded billboards with propaganda, blaming the EU for every bad thing and praising Orbán for protecting Hungary.
Unfortunately these 2 work incredibly well on the majority of the population in the countryside, elderly people and everyone else who primarily get their information from TV and radio, most of whom don’t speak English to even check foreign sources even if they wanted to.
I’m not sure if ejecting Hungary would “fix” the issue, but I also don’t know what could be done at this point to get the country back on track. It’d be nice to maybe require more like a 90% support for motions to carry in the EU rather than a tiny country like Hungary being able to hold the entire continent hostage.

Yeah, I know that now but none of us knew how to handle the situation then. I’ve learned since then to read up on the rights i will have in countries I plan on visiting.
It’s a shame that we pay our taxes only to have to invest even more energy into protecting ourselves from the system that’s built with our money (I’ve found this to be true to different degrees in most countries unfortunately).
