I actually love that we have resourses like this.

My gripe is that they miss the mark by targeting new dads. The reason dad jokes are great is they are the first jokes your kid understands. So I would think dads of 4 to 9 year-olds would be a better target.

The high you feel when your kid cracks up at some offhand dumb joke can’t be bottled.

But the reason I love this as a resourse is that explaining jokes to a curious child develops connections in their head in a way that only a parenting rolemodel can really do. So even if it’s not laugh-out-loud funny to explain a joke, if your child tells you that they do not get a joke, first and foremost realize that is a vunerable admission. Buddies will rag on you for not getting it. Parents see a gap in their kids’ world experience that they can fill.

I said “read the meme” because that is all I was addressing. The title is just engagement-bait as far as I’m concerned. It’s either a meme or question. I’m sure others are here for the question but not the meme. And therefore, I’m being engagement-baited. Who knows, but I was clear about what I was talking about.

I just think saying “you’re completely missing the point” to a comment that is perfectly on topic is completely uncalled for.

I reason I think git is dead-simple to “self-host” is because I do it. I’m not a computer guy. I just used svn to version control some papers with fellow grad students. (it didn’t last, i was the only one that liked it.) so now i use git for some notes i archive. I’m not saying there aren’t tools to considerably upgrade the easy-of-use factor that would require some tech skills I don’t possess, but I stand by point.

Do you honestly think they’re “completely missing the point”? Read the meme. There’s no mention of gitea. Self-hosting git is nothing to wiggle your tie over. Maybe setting up the things you are talking about are, but git?

I have an old netbook. I can’t offer help, but I can share my plan.

I hope to have it network boot from my useful computer. That way, I can use it in the kitchen to browse recipes and stuff. Of course, then I also get to brag about having a mainframe. No one has to know it’s a <$1k laptop.

I’m not sure if that would work for you. my netbook is 4GB ram.

Incidentally, I had a System76 computer with about those specs way back when. I loved it. It’s hard to justify that form factor now since flagship phones are basically filling that role today. But now that I think about it, it’s kinda like the equivalent of a 2024 smartphone was in my everyday-carry in 2009. Kinda wild to think about it that way. Not that it could make phone calls, but my phone doesn’t seem to do that either :P

Even if the monetary damage is comparable, not sure if it would be worth getting prosecuted.

When I went to college, I was given a reverse Polish notation calculator. I think there is some (albeit small) advantage of becoming fluent in both PEMDAS and RPN to see the arbitrariness. This kind of arguement is like trying to argue linguistics in a single language.

Btw, I’m not claiming that RPN has any bearing on the meme at hand. Just that there are different standards.

Exactly. I don’t why it’s always surprising to people that court battles are fought over legal definitions. That’s how legal definitions are made.

Vegetables are not anything that is not a fruit. Tomatos are both, as are cucumbers. When you say “technically a fruit is blah blah blah”, it says nothing about whether something is vegetable. The definition is from a different domain. The definition of vegetable seems to have to due with human digestion. The botanical definition of fruit doesn’t care about the existence of humans. Vegetables are culinary and to some extent cultural. “Fruit” also has a culinary meaning, but its not technical in that domain. There is no way to “technically” distinguish between fruit and vegetables as “vegetable” isn’t technically botanically defined.
