  • Having been a plaintiff in a civil case, with thankfully only money on the line, it was a real eye opener for me of how little the jurors actually get to see, and how much power a single judge has (read: a LOT). It really made me reflect on how absolutely awful and terrifying it must be to have your freedom on the line, and to witness something like I did that felt horrifyingly unfair, and know you could go to jail for it. And I know it happens, a lot, and disproportionately to black and brown folk no less.

We have a dog door in the laundry room leading outside, and a pocket door leading to the laundry room. The dog can open the pocket door if she wants to; I’ve witnessed it when she really wanted to rush outside and bark at something. Yet when it’s closed and we’re around, she asks us to open it. You silly dog, I know you can do it because I’ve seen you do it. You ain’t fooling anyone. Why do I have to get off the couch to do something for you that we both know you can do yourself? I swear they’re just like children.

  • Part of the reason it’s demoralizing is that most of the time the poor support people don’t actually have the power to fix the problem that the person on the other end of the line is having. In many cases they’re punished for letting someone cancel service which is why you keep getting passed around until someone takes pity on you and accepts the hit to their metrics. I know sometimes people suck but I think we mostly suck when the systems we operate in make it impossible to lean into our humanity.
