Wikipedia functionally ended the market for encyclopedias. When I was a kid I would go to the library and read an encyclopedia just to see what random knowledge was in there. Traveling salesman would sell encyclopedias door to door and they were hugely expensive. Then Encarta came along and it was mind blowing you could have all that information on some CDs. Then Wikipedia killed all of them and did it for free.

When computers began to take hold in middle class homes, one of the biggest gold rushes was to be the encyclopedia of choice on the computer, since consumers saw encyclopedia software as an obvious (and maybe best!) use case for a computer.

My account has been locked up because my daughter has three separate BG3 games going with friends. Last week my son said we need to put a time limit on her because nobody else can play on Steam.

So it’s probably been a decade since I did back ribs. I’ve just always done spare ribs, but I saw a nice sale on back ribs and figured sure what the hell.

I’ve always taken the silverskin off. Once I didn’t and I remember getting comments about it, like the mouth feel was a little tough there. This time I went to grab it to yank it off and it was super thin and barely there, so I just said screw it and left it on.

For whatever reason, it was great. Just a crackly little bite on the back side of the rib that came off cleanly. I think the thinness of the skin certainly helped it and if I saw it that thin again, I’d leave it on again.

I screencapped this because I can’t trust the internet to have it when I want to come back and laugh at it again.

I know enough to be dangerous. I know enough to follow faqs but dumb enough to not backup like I should.

So I’d be running my server on bare metal and have a couple services going and sooner or later, shit would get borked. Shit that was miles past my competence to fix. Sometimes I’d set up a DB wrong, or break it, or an update would screw it up, and then it would all fall apart and I’m there cursing and wiping and starting all over.

Docker fixes that completely. It’s not perfect, but it has drastically lowered my time working on my server.

My server used to be a hobby that I loved dumping hours into. Now, I just want shit to work.

I used to use a self hosted nitter for FreshRSS too. I gave up completely. I pruned all the Xitter feeds and looked for other sources.

FreshRSS is great. Container is easy to run.

For years, I had an unstable unraid server. I was fixing it every couple of days after a lockup. I had decided that unraid sucked. When it was up for a week I celebrated. Every one of my dockers was a suspect. I learned to hate all of them.

Then I shitcanned the next cloud docker.

Been up for months without a hiccup.

I served a prime rib for Christmas, but had a bunch of kids in the house and I knew they wouldn’t love a nice pink roast, so we made a bolognese for the kids. Then the adults ended up stealing it all night cause it was great.

But mine didn’t look like that.

Portia was huge in my house, but my daughter was so hooked it’s going to end up being one of her favs of all time. We preordered and then waited forever for Sandrock, and then she didn’t like it. She disliked it so much it put me off it. I’ll have to give it a shot.
