Yeah, and I can’t speak for everyone here, but I didn’t even bother trying it even though I was intrigued. It seemed like the kind of thing that could be completely game-changing and I wasn’t willing to get hooked on another Googler’s pet project that’d just get the axe in a few years. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy at this point, nothing new is likely to get any traction because no one wants to run the risk and then Google cancels it. If they were willing to put in writing that they’ll support something for x number of years (that’s end user facing, not just whatever contracts they make with devs or whatever), it’d probably go a long way, but they’re not willing to support an expensive flop if the product is what actually sucks, so, they’re not likely to do that.

Hell, even anything older still runs the risk at any time :-\

I’ll give the human readable name a bit more info like if it’s a fan (then it’s ‘Kitchen Fan 1’, ‘Kitchen Fan 2’, etc…), but I’ll usually make a group and expose the group to voice and the group would be based on the human name (Kitchen Fan). For most rooms though, I only really care about the room itself, so, “turn off the kitchen lights” is all that’s really needed and that’s handled by the zones.

We had two of the dumb versions in the kitchen and I was forbidden to install anything smart in there until I found something similar. Then a year later, they made the smart version.

10/10 would recommend, it’s expensive since you’ll also need a hub, but I’ve had less issues with them than my Hue’s at this point.

I’ve got a z-wave dimmer and every now and then it’ll just flip out and start dimming the light for no reason (goes to 1% and then rises to 100%) and needs to be power cycled to fix.
I’ve got my Kasa dimmers, but they just feel cheap. I’ve started hiding those away for locations they’re not really needed to be touched (attic lights, closet lights, etc…)

OP – I would whole heartedly second @lemming741 's recommendation. They’re very good and very intuitive to use in a non-smart fashion as well.

OP, it’s not ‘money is no object’ because it’s actually pretty cheap, but it’s actually very easy to flash and install, so, if I were to do it again, I’d probably choose the same hardware since it went pretty smoothly.

From what I understand due to the way that Lemmy handles federation, it doesn’t (currently?) have a way to handle an instance changing its domain name and still being able to communicate or even an individual user changing their instance and retaining their comments/votes/etc… (this might be more ActivityPub limited since the way Mastodon does it still seems pretty hacky and just a work around for underlying issues).

From a website perspective, yeah, just change some settings and you’re good to go and accessible on the web, but that doesn’t mean that anything regarding Lemmy is going to actually work.

For me, it’s the refusal to demontize them that’s particularly bad. I can understand free speech absolutists (in theory anyways, in practice you’ll find that they VERY rarely actually are and will happily censor people they disagree with like LGBTQIA+ or sex work content), but that doesn’t mean you need to actively be funding them!

Quite a few organizations and lots of individuals are now starting to migratev away from it and if any of the money made by visiting goes to Nazis, many of us would prefer to avoid the place when possible.

Firing the people that do the work to make the company money is just good business! They’re a dime a dozen, just hire another 2 managers and a couple marketing execs and soon you’ll be printing money! /s [these companies are freaking dumb]

I’ve got a couple of Raspberry Pi Zero’s that emulate a mass storage device (basically it acts like a USB drive) that I have connected to 3D printers and my wife’s embroidery machine.

Instead of using it with a network share like in the link, I share the folder with SyncThing.

It’s super convenient to not have to move a USB drive around and can just leave it connected and get the files on there seamlessly.

I can’t say I’ve used Wordpad intentionally - ever -, but they do serve different functions.

Yeah, but, I don’t see how that really changes anything.

On a smaller instance (or one that’s defederated from others … in either direction), that might very well completely shift focuses.

For the Fediverse specific community, if you want one with the most chance of getting to the developers, use the instance that they’re on, otherwise, I’d think to just let the cultures develop and diverge naturally as they’re likely to.

To be fair, to some of us this is a feature not a bug.

A technology post on a technology/infosec/IT focused instance seems to have a COMPLETELY different focus and conversation than one on the larger instances, for example and I don’t want those mixed in with people saying that AI is a Jewish conspiracy to take over the world.

There are smaller dedicated art focused instances popping up too. I’d expect that they’re going to have a better set of conversations around those subjects than the same threads on a general instance and I don’t want those mixed up.

If it’s a subject I really want to see a lot of discussion about, I’ll look at multiple threads… can this mean that some subjects won’t have as good of a conversation because people aren’t bouncing off of each other? Yeah, absolutely and that frankly SUCKS, but, as stated, it also means that some of the niche conversations have a chance to grow where they may have previously just been unseen due to how many people are talking.

To me, they’re on different instances for a reason, let it grow organically. The ones that stand out will wind up being the main ones people use.

As for amount of users. A decent amount of those are likely alts people created when instances were having problems or just to try out the different locations.
Or, people just didn’t like the Fediverse for all the reasons you stated, which is also possible, but I don’t necessarily think chasing numbers should be the end all goal

Meh, I don’t like mushrooms and really don’t like the black bean burgers and haven’t liked any other veggie burger I’ve tried, but the Impossible ones I can hardly tell the difference from cow, so … why wouldn’t I choose the impossible when given the opportunity?

So, for me, I guess the answer is that if I want a burger, I want a burger, why would I go for something that doesn’t taste anything like a burger?
