And fuck nazis
Got my first warning from upvoting Luigi.
I will keep upvoting him :)
I got banned for posting an animated gif of Luigi.
Back in 2017(?) I got whale whaled for telling a racist to commit seppuku. Would’ve worded it differently but I don’t wholly regret it
I left Reddit because they killed 3rd party apps. Since that day, they’ve only gone on to butcher the platform even further.
Joining Lemmy was a damn good decision.
Enshitification drives stock prices. Only the rich care about stock prices and they have no interest in using the platform. The platform dies off a death of a thousand cuts… story as old as time
I think it’s more stock prices / shareholders drive enshittification
Sure but why would they drive it unless it drove stock prices.

I still don’t understand it, how does making a product worse drive stock prices?
Because they make the product worse to gate working features behind a paywall without spending development time and money. It’s the opposite of innovation, it’s going backwards. The parasite class (investors) reward that behavior with more investment because now the company has increased profits by selling the working used-to-be-free features at a premium. They couple that with buybacks and layoffs to juice the stock price … and then discard the husk of a company and start a new one
damn good indeed! plus with a proper app for mastodon and pixelfed we’ve got it all!
There are other lemmy-like sites as well BTW
Reddit will now issue warnings to users who “upvote several pieces of content banned for violating our policies” within “a certain timeframe,” starting first with violent content, the company announced on Wednesday.
“This will have no impact on the vast majority of users as most already downvote or report abusive content,” a Reddit employee says in the announcement post. In comments on the post, a user expressed concern that the new policy could make people “paranoid about voting,” but the employee says that “this would be an unacceptable side effect, which is why we want to monitor this closely and ramp it up thoughtfully.”
If it violates policies, remove it and move on. This is weird.
“We have done this in the past for quarantined communities and found that it did help to reduce exposure to bad content, so we are experimenting with this sitewide,” according to the main post. Reddit “may consider” expanding the warnings in the future to cover repeated upvotes of other kinds of actions as well as taking other types of actions in addition to warnings.
Now that there is Thoughtcrime territory.
the thought police.
“Hey investors look away from the huge pile of porn we’re hosting and look at these cool content filters we’re adding”.
Porn, you say? 🧐
This reminds me lots of when Facebook started applying warnings/bans/etc retroactively to content without any context. I remember getting several wrist slaps in the same month for content I had shared a decade prior that really wasn’t all that bad. But Facebook decided it was a problem and made me question what I was allowed to post in the future. It didn’t take long after that for me to stop using Facebook completely.
and reddit is copying the same methods, retroactively banning people, additionally any old acct with comments that are also old can be reported by other users still.
Ok. I’m new here. What’s a tankie
Edit: tysm everyone for the answers
Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to authoritarian communists, especially those who support acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie
Just avoid the Tankie Triad (.ml, hex and grad) and you’ll be fine
I think hexbear.net is expired, so hexbear straight up isn’t an option atm.
EDIT: it’s back up, as cm0002 pointed out.
Nah the domain admin (unfortunately) eventually showed up and reclaimed it before the auction could complete. It’s been restored and they actually added additional admins to the domain console this time :(
I stand corrected. Comment edited.
People who are obsessed with tanks
No you’re thinking of Acoustic people
Sounds right
Panzer IV my beloved
Freshwater or salt?
Ah that’s me
People that Stan authoritarian countries. The term comes from when the USSR crushed liberation movements with tanks in the Republics and many western communists approved of the crushing. People who love China, Russia, Assad’s Syria, etc are tankies.
Makes sense. Tyvm
Corpo speak for communist originally, but now just used for most left-leaning people. Sucks though because I used it endearingly and now it’s used for center-left people who are far from communist :(
It’s actually old hat. Users on r/cth (where hexbear came from) were catching admin bans for upvoting the “wrong” posts years ago.
What was wrong about them?
Stuff along the lines of Luigi-posting. CTH was much more of a proper “all the left” community with everyone from soc dems on up that was largely just filled with anti-establishment shit posters. But, we loved John Brown etc.
they often approve of the racial genocides, hunting down of the lgbt and other morally reprehensible stuff this authoritarian regimes did.
Tankies are economically leftwing but their social views can be…questionable
I do not believe without a source that Reddit admins were banning chapos for upvoting positive-spin genocide. Not that I doubt it happened, but if they were doing that there wouldn’t have been anyone left in the conservative subs (except for reasons, of course)
I can believe chapo was one of the subs that would ban you for doing it or commenting in the wrong sub like AgainstHateSubs would but that’s a different claim than what you’re making.
That all said, it’s probably pretty hard to find a source for decade old Reddit drama at this point, but if you’ve got one let it rip.
CTH was not very moderative of leftist hot takes. One of the things that probably contributed to their ban was that they regularly brigaded other subreddits (this was a common complaint throughout Reddit when I used it), and they regularly left calls for violence up such as “Guillotine Biden Now”. They were also accused of ban evasion and other minor things.
EDIT: As another vector of this, there were similar accusations leveled at CTH as hexbear and Lemmy grad, where users claimed being banned for not buying more extreme views.
The exact wording seems to be “banned content”, which includes a lot more than just violence (is violence banned in the first place, considering subs like r/PublicFreakout?).
Yeah tbh if it were just violent content I’d be fine with that. I still don’t trust Reddit as a platform anymore, but I’d be 100% understanding of the rule.
Banned/Removed-by-Admin content, though? That’s absurd. That’s way too broad.
“Violent content” could also be videos of officer misconduct, and there’s the whole can of worms of what “promoting violence” means.
Fair
Guarantee something like posting a picture of Luigi will be considered banned content promoting violence.
Edit: Called it
Well tbf most of those are unless you’re saying “I don’t think this is the killer” or resharing a news article. He’s not celebrated for pacifism.
I think it’s advocating violence, and extreme violence (things like terrorist beheading videos and such) that are banned. Things like Waffle House fights likely won’t meet the banning threshold.
I assume this is prompted by Luigi-inspired death threats to CEOs. If they are monitoring this so closely, I bet the FBI might want to take a look at those records too…
I think it very well could, as well as any other reddit corporate agenda such as removing content at request of pieces of shit who punch and berate service staff and then later sue to remove said content from the internet. It’s a necessary distinction.
I hate the uprising of the word tankie like the rise of the word woke. Just more language to make walls between people.
Pretending that is not tankie behaviour 😂😂
also saying Luigi can be considered flagged too.
In general, aligning with Tankies for any reason, ever, will just trigger a reactionary bias against whatever message you’re promoting. I’m not saying I dissagree automatically, but it’s the opposite of helping your case.
When Tankies agree with a statement I have to stop for a moment and reassess how that statement can be used to maim and destroy western democracies or if they’re just making another show of pretending to have morals.
Western bourgeois democracies, a.k.a. capitalist oligarchies.
fucking tankie
Yeah we can both hate tankies (lovers of brutal dictatorships) and reddit (a now sucky media platform).
This post is quite crappy and wrong IMO.
What is a tankie?
The nationalists hanging around in leftist spaces
Thank you!
Since we’re counting to ten:
Classic tankies are the authoritarian leaning communists, that is communists willing to use (military) power to accomplish their goals and will voice those more aggressive sounding opinions.
No, that’s not true. Authoritarians can’t be communist, because communism is stateless. You mean authoritarian socialists.
Ah, thank you!
Radical centrists who want a form of socialism where everyone is oppressed by the state, thereby combining the ideas of the left and the right.
That sounds… terrible.
They claim to be the only real leftists, because communism requires putting down revolutions with tanks and supporting genocidal dictators. They call it “the dictatorship of the proletariat”, where proletariat means worker. They think a dictatorship can be leftist.
How many of them ate paint chips as children?
You’re about to get 10 different answers, most would say
-
Any user from the Lemmygrad and Hexbear instances, and some from Lemmy.ml
-
Genocide deniers
-
Pro-Russia and pro-China users
I think it’s just a derogatory term for anyone that’s anti-imperialism/liberalism
Nah we anti-imperialists don’t fit in to that
See, I don’t even know. The term is used so broadly. It’s basically just “Lemmy users I don’t like”
I have never seen a tankie oppose liberalism. I’ve seen plenty of tankies say they oppose liberalism, but then they act like liberals. It’s very confusing.
Got it, thank you!
-
To me seems to be people that think that the evil imperialist actions of countries that claim(ed) to be Communist are excused by the evil imperialist actions of the USA.
Got it, thank you!
People who support real communism. Think the USSR and Communist China. They’re called tamkies because they used tanks to kill civilians.
They weren’t civilians, they were fascist counter-revolutionary gangs who wanted to reinstate a Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
real communism
How exactly do you define this?
Well obviously it’s only real communism if being gay is illegal and the government sells lumber and steel to Nazi Germany to use in weapons.
Thank you!
Just another way to allow hateful right wing content to stay up while punishing users who aren’t retarded for upvoting Luigi memes and saying trump is a fascist etc
What else is new on Reddit? They should just pull the trigger and make an official bigots only policy like twitter
In case you’re wondering what’s considered “violent content” on Reddit and how far they’ll push this definition, calling the top 10 breakdown of healthcare CEOs “Luigi’s List” counts.
