G’day all. So on top of everything that’s going on, a good friend of mine died yesterday. She’d had a lifelong battle with illness and it finally beat her. Yesterday was a day of tears, but today I just felt flat. The kids get it (mum’s sad) and let me wallow in bed a bit more than usual. Watched a movie, not sure why, called Arrival (on Netflix). Mostly was pretty boring until the last half hour or so where it suddenly changed gear and was mind-blowing. Tonight I’m going to watch *3 body problem.*Now to make pizza and eat leftover pasta that I made into a bake.

Got a note from someone around the corner. This is the second one now.

    It reads:

    "Dear xxx,

I’ve moved into xxx rd. Fran suggested you may have spare lemons Thanks, Caroline."

I have no idea who these people are…

Now this could turn into a mills & boon plot:

*It was cold, nearing sunset, the beach beckoned. With windswept hair and an unshaven jawline that could possibly cut ice, xxx decided to chance it. “Who is this mystery lady”? “Why do they all want my lemons”?

    Questions that needed answers.

xxx carefully selects the best lemons, blemish free… “what if she’s the one” he wonders as he approaches.

He gets to the door… heart racing.

Not a moment too soon the door swings open to reveal a scantily clad siren with perfect dimensions…

“uhh, hi, I heard you were after lemons” xxx awkwardly mutters, trying to maintain eye contact.

“oh is that for me” she says gently.

“uhh, yeah…” and before xxx could pull out the note the she puts her finger on her bottom lip, looking him up and down lowering her voice to a whisper…

    “oh not the lemons…”

Realising what’s happening, xxx drops the bag of lemons then spends 2 minutes picking them up.*

    spoiler

Holy shit, the place I contacted to arrange a car booking as a hail mary came through and got us a vehicle at short notice, on a Sunday, less than 24 hrs from my email, for ALL 5 days of our stay - on an island (= few cars). And for a very typical price (~70 AUD/day including insurance and tax). With pickup and dropoff directly at our port of arrival!!!

I’d tried the car rental agencies directly and found nothing, so these guys must have some cars specially kept up their sleeves. Now the fact that my friends’ accom and mine is spread apart is less of a problem, and we can be way more flexible about timings, especially with inclement weather and with not needing to rush hikes to meet bus timings. And it’s cost effective too compared to daily bus trips for 3 people. What a huge, massive relief… I feel genuinely blessed. Much more enthusiastic about this part of the trip now.

Apparently there will be both pro Palestine and pro Israel rallies in the CBD today. This has the potential to end badly.

Alright I’m done. My brain is mush. For the IT initiated I can now create file shares for roaming user profiles and everything you need to be able to do before you get to that step. And also do moderate level GPO stuff. I can’t wait to see what a normal companies OU looks like and how many GPO they have.

Before I started on Saturday, I knew pretty much nothing about AD except for what it was used for.

I hope it works for my interview tomorrow!

If you want to combine what you’ve learned but make it a bit more modern/fancier, have a look at FSLogix Profile Containers. It’s just setting up file shares and creating a GPO but has one extra step which is installing an agent.

Probably an hour maximum and you get to add another skill to your arsenal.

There are a bunch of YouTube videos which run through it available too if you prefer that over doco.

I just saw your interview is tomorrow… ok it might be a little late in the evening now.

I’ve been working inside enterprise level active directory for a long long time and if you get the basics of GPO, filtering, policy ordering that’s a great start. GPO loopback is pretty important to know about in complex environments too.

I downloaded that last week and thought it was pretty pointless. I wanted to see if anybody was complaining about the damn car alarm. It seems that so few people here are on it, that their idea of a “neighbourhood” is anything within about 30km of me

It was also really dead. The top post was somebody at some dodgy company trying to recruit people, the next 2 were people introducing themselves, then the next one was form 12 weeks ago from people in Kingsville complaining people had broken into their cars. I don’t live anywhere near Kingsville…

I’m wearing pants in my own home. It’s officially cold season.

I might even put on a t-shirt instead of a singlet. But that’s an absolute last resort.

Since we’re accelerating toward mid-year… Q(s) time (inspired by @CEOofmyhouse56):

What goal/s have you achieved so far this year and what are you hoping to by EOY?

(Still working on mine so I’ll just put down getting to see some major travel landmarks, although that’s more of a lifetime/bucket list/travel thing.)

I finally quit call centre work and am starting a TAFE course that will lead me to working in an industry that I’ve wanted to be in since I was in HS.

Am getting back on the therapy wagon after a hiatus.

Seeing my dad more often, as he’s the only parent I talk to and I love him, involving overcoming my own feelings of failure and not being good enough

Things feel very ‘one step forward, two steps back’.

But I’m making progress on having my health taken seriously and hoping for some positive changes (or at least further appointments) by the end of the year. I’ve at least sharpened a bunch of charcoal and graphite pencils in case energy for art hits.

Other than that I’m basically just taking care of myself and my cat.

All of my plans/goals have been completely changed around by my father’s illness, so I probably less achieved than I would have otherwise.

I have managed to max out my concessional super contributions this financial year and have gotten my clutter problem under control to the extent that moving house now seems like a real possibility. I was doing well with my garden & growing lots of vegies over summer, but the focus on that has now changed to keeping it tidy for future sale so my enthusiasm levels for that have dissipated a lot.

My goal for the end of year is mostly just to move house, which will involves selling two houses and consolidating households with myself and my mother, so is a big enough thing to focus on without adding anything else.

Hmm… ticked some big items off so far out of necessity:

      • work out whether I’m staying or going re: Melbourne ✅
      • find workplaces that are healthier and happier than my last place ✅
      • get a cheap enough car ✅
      • travel more - ✅ (partly)

But still a fair more to work through.

      • increase my earning potential at least a tad - tbc but partly ✅
      • finalise finishing my degree - tbc (partly ✅)
      • restore my savings used when unemployed - tbc
      • make new friends - tbc…
      • try going camping solo - tbc
      • find sustainable pathway to never working FT again - tbc
      • figure out a regular fitness routine that I like - very much tbc
      • cat??? 🐱😸😺 - 🤔

That pet heating pad gets quite hot when covered (by blanket, and probably by cat). It says it has a cutoff but tells you to use a thermometer to test the surface so I don’t know how safe it is to have in the bed.

Crackers and broth for breakfast. For some reason pusscat loves both. (Zero onions or garlic involved.) She got some crumbs and a tiny bit of broth spooned over her wet food and polished off the whole meal.

I really hate that that’s even a thing. Logically, my brain wants to do it in the order that it’s shown in. Doing it any other way just feels unnatural. Like building a roof before building the house

I had the order of operations with no problems, but somehow managed to calculate 18-12 = 4 which really messed me up.

I am good at maths in theory, but tend to muddle up calculations in my head. I really need to be able to pin the numbers down on paper, in my head it’s like they wriggle around on me.

Similar with spelling for me. Can’t do it out loud without at least air writing it with a finger, and paper is better. Odd mental blank spot.
