Hamas on Tuesday named Yahya Sinwar, its top official in Gaza who masterminded the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, as its new leader in a dramatic sign of the power of the Palestinian militant group’s hardline wing after his predecessor was killed in a presumed Israeli strike in Iran.

The selection of Sinwar, a secretive figure close to Iran who worked for years to build up Hamas’ military strength, was a defiant signal that the group is prepared to keep fighting after 10 months of destruction from Israel’s campaign in Gaza and after the assassination of Sinwar’s predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh.

And Netenyahu gets exactly what he wants. Someone recalcitrant on the other side he can blame stalled ceasefire deals on. I for one won’t let the media manufacture Israel as the good guy who can’t get the other side to come to the table. Israel is the guy that bombs the table.

The table doesn’t need a “good guy” to function.

It can have a bad guy, and a genocidal monster “bad guy”

If one of the people who’s supposed to be at the table is killing the other person who needs to come to it then there is no table. There’s simply that one man and targets.

          Sure.

Let’s be clear here, there’s zero question what’s happening is genocide, and netanyahu is to blame.

But no one at this table is “good” or anywhere near it.

Killing or attempting to harm civilians is not ok (As in the oct 7 raid, and other Hamas activities that target civilians) even if your opponent is doing it A WHILE LOT MORE AND A WHOLE LOT WORSE.

Yeah - one is literally defined as a terrorist organization while the other is an established and recognized country. Not liking someone doesn’t make them a terrorist

Hate Israel all you want, question the motivations, actions and policies, but they aren’t a terrorist organization.

Terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation to pursuit a political aim. It can be an individual, a group and even a country. Israel is destroying the majority of civilians infrastructure and targetting civilians, they let settlers commit violence against west banker, they are kidnapping people everyday there, they are torturing prisoners and raping them. All of that for the zionism political goal. Get the hell out of here with your israel is not a terrorist state. I don’t give a damn about the west hypocritical use of the concept of terrorism it’s based on interests instead of the real definition of terrorism

There are no good guys; there’s no the terrorist, because they’re literally both doing terrorism. Hamas and Israel have both committed acts of deliberate violence against civilians, and both are lead by war criminals.

Why is that a shit take?

There was a more moderate guy who was in-between the Israelis and the more hardline Hamas people like Sinwar and the Israelis just killed him.

The Israeli government just made the situation worse and made peace even harder to attain.

Every step they took since the 7th of October was only with Sinwar’s approval anyway. Nothing has actually changed in that manner.

The point remains that there was a more moderate influence on Hamas’ side which the Israelis just killed. If you keep killing moderates the only ones left are the hardliners.

I still don’t understand how anyone calls Haniyeh a “moderate”.
This is the guy who was the leader of Hamas in Gaza when they took control from Fatah by throwing officials from buildings and shooting into crowds of their supporters.

Because moderation is always relative. Haniyeh was willing to do things that Sinwar is not.

This is obvious stuff, not sure what you don’t understand.

After Fatah refused to peacefully leave power, having lost the election. Revolution isn’t always pretty. But you can avoid it by leaving when you lose the election.

The whole mess started exactly because Haniyeh was a hardliner that wasn’t willing to accept any previous agreements the PLO had already made.

Hamas took over Gaza shortly after agreeing to a unity government with Fatah.

The point is, there wasn’t much of a difference between Haniyeh and Sinwar.

I find it offensive you called genocide a defense against terrorism. I find your defense of an apartheid system that spawned an armed resistance to be offensive.

When you put it like that, it sounds likely that it’s EXACTLY what they wanted. Just like when they funded Hamas to drive the much more moderate PLO/Fatah out of Gaza…

I mean it was pretty wild that they used gliders to fly over the border while a coordinated barrage of rockets kept the iron dome busy. That kind of thing does require planning

It’s pretty much on brand for Hamas, so +1 point for consistency.

Unfortunately this will probably fuel the Israeli far-right pro-genocidal Judeofascist propaganda.

“Look at what Hamas did! If we don’t kill ALL THE PALESTINIANS THEY’LL KILL ALL THE JEWS!”
